Mumbai Indians (MI) head coach and former Sri Lanka national cricket team captain Mahela Jayawardene has shared the latest update on Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness ahead of IPL 2025. The star pacer is currently at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru working through his rehabilitation process. The pacer suffered back spasms during the final Test of the India National Cricket Team Border-Gavaskar Trophy and has been out of action since then. Following medical scans he was advised to rest and undergo rehabilitation at the NCA. The speedster has not played any cricket for the past two months due to a stress-related lower back injury.
Speaking in Mumbai, Jayawardene confirmed that Bumrah’s recovery is being closely monitored by the BCCI’s medical team.
"Jasprit, at the moment, is with NCA. He's just started that progress, so we have to wait and see what their feedback is on him. At the moment, everything's going well, but, obviously, it's on a day-to-day basis. He's in good spirits and hopefully, he can join the team sooner." He added.
Jayawardene acknowledged that missing a bowler of Bumrah’s caliber would be a challenge, but he remains optimistic about the team’s ability to adapt.
"Obviously, not having him is a challenge. He's one of the best bowlers in the world, and he's been a fantastic pro for us for many years. But we'll have to find a way."
He further added "It's an opportunity for someone else also to step up and show what they're capable of. That's how I see it. It gives us a different element of trying a few different things and seeing what works, and it's always good early on for us to do that."
