The emerging game has brought a number of young players onto the scene in recent years and the 2022 edition of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup offers the next generation of the game an opportunity to make a big impression.
The first round of the 2022 T20 World Cup is scheduled to start on October 16 with the first match between Sri Lanka and Namibia. Meanwhile, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has unveiled a list of five young up-and-coming talents who could make their mark in the upcoming tournament.
All five players are from associated teams participating in the tournament, including the United Arab Emirates, Scotland, the Netherlands and Namibia. While two players are from the United Arab Emirates, the remaining three players are from the other countries mentioned.
Vriitya Aravind (United Arab Emirates) - wicketkeeper/batter, 20th
Many world-class players make a first impression by the way they look with a racquet in hand. Your first impression of Vriitya Aravind will probably be the sound of a ball hitting the middle of his bat.
Aravind, Player of the Tournament and leading run scorer of the T20 World Cup Qualifier A, represents the phoenix-like rise of the UAE, who have enjoyed strong results following scandals that rocked the team's cricket in 2019.
Aravind was one of several young Emirati players thrown early into senior international cricket as a result, but the dashing top glove man has passed every test with aplomb.
Karthik Palaniapan Meiyappan (United Arab Emirates) - Leg Spinner, 21st
Another player who quickly rose to the UAE national team and Aravind's U19 World Cup teammate, Karthik Meiyappan fits the archetype of the short-form leg spinner that was so successful in the T20 game.
A seven-step run-up with a high trigger point, almost off vertical, Meiyappan now has the confidence to throw the ball over the batsman's eye-lines and disrupts opponents with a mix of dip and spin. Meiyappan made his T20I debut last year after solid ODI performances and played a key role in the UAE's Qualifier A campaign earlier in the year, winning five wickets in just seven overs in the three games
Should Meiyappan take off in Australia, he could pick up a slew of wickets and prove pivotal in UAE's hopes of reaching the Super 12 stage of the tournament.
Brandon McMullen (Scotland) - Batting All-rounder, 22
Third on the list is Brandon McMullen from Scotland, known as a 'true' all-rounder. McMullen uses his size as an advantage to gain bounce with the ball. He is also more than skillful with the racquet, as he has previously shown in the home circle. The 22-year-old offers Scotland the opportunity to be versatile in any role.
Bas de Leede (Netherlands), Batting All-rounder, 22
Bas de Leede made his debut for the Netherlands at the last T20 World Cup in 2021. The batsman struggled to show his true form as he hit just 228 runs in 13 innings with a 20.72 average and a batting average of 101 .78 scored. All that changed after the T20 Worlds as Leede had since played seven shots and smashed 289 runs, hitting on 123 and a 72.25 average.
Divan la Cock (Namibia) - Batting all-rounder, 19
Namibia's Divan la Cock could get a chance to show his talent in the T20 World Cup opener when his side meet Sri Lanka. La Cock shot into the spotlight after hitting a stunning 123* at a national tournament in 2020 with just 59 balls and 11 sixes.
Here are five emerging players named by ICC to shine in T20 World Cup 2022: Divan la Cock, Bas de Leede, Brandon McMullen, Karthik Meiyappan, Vriitya Aravind
