Currently WTC matches award 12 points for a win, 6 for a tie, and 4 for a draw regardless of the match conditions. The new system being considered could introduce Bonus points for away wins by Encouraging teams to perform better in challenging conditions and Additional points for beating top-ranked teams. Victories against India, Australia, and England could carry extra value.

A former India cricketer welcomed the move, telling PTI “Yeah, it’s a good move if it really happens. The teams will be more motivated to go for results, as we could see some exciting games.”
The ICC is set to meet in April 2025 to discuss the reforms. If approved, the WTC 2025-27 cycle will begin under the new system with England’s five-Test series against India National Cricket Team on June 20. Meanwhile, the ongoing 2023-25 WTC cycle will conclude with Australia vs South Africa final at Lord’s on June 11, 2025.
If the ICC goes ahead with these changes it could redefine the way Test cricket is played and ranked. Teams will have to rethink their strategies making every match more competitive and engaging.
