Amir just revealed his decision to come out of retirement and play international cricket again. Following the news, he was called up for the T20I series against New Zealand. Ramiz Raja, a former Pakistan player and PCB president, criticised his participation in the team for that series. He stated that cricketers implicated in fixing should not be put in the team.
After such comments, Amir talked about his return to cricket in an interview given to a Pakistani journalist. He said, “I have done penance for that big mistake and if you look at my career I was banned from 2010 to 2015 and took retirement from 2020 to 2024 so I have lost nine years but I accept it all as God’s will and I have moved on.”
Critics have questioned why Amir was called back to the national squad after returning from retirement. Amir did not do well in domestic cricket, thus they made such accusations. Amir added, “There has been a lot of criticism by some people on me and Imad being selected without playing domestic cricket. I ask them what is Pakistan’s premier domestic T20 event. The PSL. And both of us (Imad) have played and performed in the PSL besides appearing regularly in other leagues. So what is wrong with selecting us for the T20 format?”
Amir's spot-fixing during the 2010 Test series against England resulted in a five-year cricket suspension. A component of the penalty was prison time. Amir returned to international cricket in 2016 and retired in 2020, claiming mental strain.
