After Chandika Hathurusingha became the head coach, Bangladesh played the first Test against Ireland. Opener Zakir Hasan was not in that only Test. Hathurusingha saw Zakir for the first time against Afghanistan in the recently-concluded Test. He is satisfied with that. Besides Zakir, Mahmudul Hasan Joy caught the eye of Hathurusingha.

Hathurusingha thinks that Zakir played both pace and spin well. Addressing reporters on Sunday, Hathurusingha said, “I was very impressed actually. For the first time, I saw Zakir’s batting. You know that he got injured and after that India games. So here a really good start in his Test career but for the first time I saw him batting in front my eyes and what I saw is very impressive. He is good against pace and good against spin, very rarely that most like you see the openers good in both and pick very good.”
Joy shined in the first innings. He scored 76 runs off 137 balls with 9 fours. Hathurusingha added, “Joy showed good temperament the way he batted… his record also says that if you get a good start, go it’s with. So really positives from those two youngsters.”
