After a month-long movement, the students of Bangladesh have achieved success in their demands. The protests, initially sparked by the call for quota reform, eventually escalated into a one-point movement demanding the resignation of the autocratic regime.
The entire nation became engulfed in the struggle, leading to the downfall of the government. The people of Bangladesh have managed to topple the Awami League government, with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fleeing to India after her resignation. An interim government has been formed, headed by Dr. Muhammad Yunus, under which all current state affairs are being managed.
However, this freedom came at a high cost, with many lives lost in the process. The long period of anarchy and unrest has left a deep impact on the nation, including on Bangladesh’s head coach Chandika Hathurusingha, who expressed his prayers for the martyrs.
Currently, the Bangladesh national team is in Pakistan for a two-match Test series. In a press conference there, Hathurusingha said, “My thoughts and prayers are with the family of those who lost their loved ones. It was really hard… I think, I hope the students' questions will be answered. It was an unprecedented event. I hope that the country will come to normalcy soon. It was very difficult.”
When asked whether the team’s performance in Pakistan could bring joy to the people of Bangladesh, Hathurusingha replied, "100%. We all know that sports have the power to unite people and offer hope. If we perform well here, we can bring happiness to both Pakistan and Bangladesh cricket fans."
Hathurusingha admitted that the situation had been emotional for him, nodding affirmatively when asked if it had affected him. Bangladesh will face Pakistan in the first Test in Rawalpindi on August 21.
