England National Cricket Team are on the verge of appointing a new T20I captain with Harry Brook expected to take over the reins following Jos Buttler’s resignation. According to a report in The Telegraph Brook is the frontrunner for the role while the ODI captaincy remains undecided with Ben Stokes also in contention.

The 26-year-old batter who served as Jos Buttler’s deputy during England Cricket Team disappointing ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign In Pakistan has emerged as a key player across formats.

Buttler stepped down as English white-ball captain after the team suffered a group-stage exit in the Champions Trophy. His resignation has opened the door for a leadership change and Brook’s experience as vice-captain puts him in pole position for the T20I role especially with the T20 World Cup 2026 set to take place in India.

Meanwhile test cricket team captain Ben Stokes’ potential return to white-ball captaincy is still being considered. The all-rounder last played ODIs during the 2023 World Cup In India but has since focused on leading England in Tests. 

Under his leadership, the Test side has won 19 matches, lost 11, and drawn just one. However with Stokes recovering from a hamstring injury England’s management, led by Rob Key has not ruled out the possibility of him leading the ODI team.

England’s next white-ball assignment will be in June against West Indies National Cricket Team where they will play three ODIs and three T20Is. The final decision on the ODI captaincy is expected before that series, giving the management ample time to assess their options.
