KL Rahul's performances in the first two Tests against New Zealand, where he scored just 0 and 10, have drawn criticism. However, Gambhir insists that Rahul still has the backing of the team due to his experience and potential to score big runs.
Despite India's loss to New Zealand in the series opener and Rahul's dip in form, Gambhir believes in giving the batter another chance. He noted that social media noise shouldn't impact team decisions.
"Social media does not matter one bit," Gambhir said to reporters on Wednesday. "What the team management and leadership group thinks is very important. He is batting really well, had a decent knock in Kanpur (against Bangladesh on a difficult wicket)."
The former Indian opener added, "I am sure he knows he has to score big runs and he has the capability of doing so. That’s why he has been backed by the team. Ultimately, everyone is judged. International cricket is all about being judged."
Rahul, who has played 53 Tests and scored 2,981 runs at an average of 33.87, has faced constant scrutiny over his performances. Despite his potential, his recent struggles have raised questions about his place in the playing XI. It's worth noting that Rahul has shifted between the opening and middle-order positions throughout his career, which could have affected his consistency.
However, Gambhir emphasized that Rahul’s fixed position in the batting order might finally allow him to settle and make significant contributions for the team. The team’s management seems confident in Rahul’s ability to bounce back, given his experience at the international level.
