On Wednesday, July 31, in Mumbai, there was a discussion on a lot of things, including seven retentions, large or small auctions, and the number of foreign players.
Some teams are more than happy to let the majority of their roster return to the auction block, while others would like to keep as many as seven players.
Franchises not interested in this year's mega auction: The following teams: Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Gujarat Titans. While, this year, the Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru are the teams wishing to participate in mega auction.
On the subject of player retention and auction size, IPL team owners could not agree upon anything. While some franchises, like the Delhi Capitals, sought to maintain the original super auction model that allowed teams to select a new player pool every three years, others, like the Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad, wanted eight or ten retentions.
“It was just to hear all the different perspectives from all the owners. The Bcci has heard us and they will give us the rules by the end of August hopefully,” Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal said. “Some people want 8 to 10, some want 4, so it is all up in the air.”
Following all of this, BCCI secretary Jay Shah declared that "an organised dialogue" had occurred amongst the owners in a statement. "The Board of Control for Cricket in India on Wednesday organised a constructive dialogue with the owners of the 10 franchises on various subjects pertaining to the upcoming season of the IPL," he said in a release.
"The franchise owners tabled feedback on player regulations and other commercial aspects, including central merchandising, licensing, and gaming. The BCCI will now take these recommendations to the IPL Governing Council for further deliberation and evaluation before formulating the IPL player regulations.”
