Worrying information about the Sreesanth spot-fixing incident in the 2013 IPL were disclosed by Neeraj Kumar, the former commissioner of the Delhi Police. According to Neeraj Kumar, S. Sreesanth was able to evade punishment despite overwhelming evidence since there was no particular statute that dealt with his case.
Kumar, a distinguished IPS officer with 37 years of service, oversaw the Delhi Police when the Special Cell, which was led by him, apprehended Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila, Ankit Chavan, and fellow Rajasthan Royals cricketers Ajit Chandila on spot-fixing charges. In 2019, the Supreme Court, notwithstanding its finding of evidence against the former India player, requested the BCCI to reassess the life suspension imposed on him. In the end, the sanction was commuted to a seven-year suspension that concluded in September 2020.
Neeraj Kumar emphasized the lack of legislative measures in India aimed at addressing corruption in the sport of cricket, drawing comparisons to nations such as Australia, Zimbabwe, and New Zealand. He emphasized the importance of enacting legislation that specifically targets corruption in diverse sports, including tennis and football.
“The case seemingly didn’t go anywhere…unfortunately, there is no law (in India) to deal with corruption in cricket or corruption in sports in general,” Kumar said during an exclusive interaction with PTI. “Even a country like Zimbabwe has specific laws. Australia, and New Zealand have it…in Europe, there is a law because corruption is there not just in cricket but in football, tennis, and golf.”
