A few setbacks, a few comebacks and a couple of upsets made the points table intensely confusing.
However, England’s agonizing defeat against Proteas has pushed them at bottom of the table on position 9. England is now one of four sides who have won only one game out of four. The defending champions are in serious trouble as their net run rate is -1.248 which is worse than Sri Lanka, Netherlands, and Bangladesh. England has no margin of error from here. They need not only to win almost every next game, but by calculated margins. The 229-run massive loss might dent their chances for the next round. They are still to find a genuine match winning combination.
India and New Zealand have won their all four matches. South Africa have lost only one and their net run rate is also best amongst all teams. Apparently, these three teams seemed to be in the semifinals unless any upset happens. The main battle for the 4th position remains between the Aussies and Pakistan. Both teams have played four matches and won two. So, the points are equal, but Pakistan is 5th on the table as their net run rate is slightly lower than Australia.

Both Australia and Pakistan have New Zealand, England, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh in their coming up fixtures. However, Australia has one game against Netherlands, while Pakistan will be facing explosive South Africa.
This is a battle of fine margins. The matches against New Zealand and England can make a difference. Both depend upon each other’s performance. One big loss can knock one of them out of the tournament.
Other teams including Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Netherlands, and Bangladesh do not seem to be in the final four unless they perform exceptionally well. They have played four matches and secured only 2 points each. However, two major upsets by Afghanistan and Netherlands will surely give them some confidence and belief for the upcoming ICC mega events.
