England planning to host Bangladesh for Test matches at Lord's

The newly published Future Tours Programme (FTP) did not include any series on English soil before 2027. However, the British daily The Telegraph reported that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will invite Bangladesh to play Tests. This test outside FTP can be held anytime in 2024 and 2025.

In 2010, Bangladesh completed their last Test series in England. In two consecutive Tests at Lord's and Old Trafford, Tamim Iqbal scored a hundred, making this tour memorable. It was also during the same tour that Bangladesh won their first-ever ODI against England. Since then, 13 years have gone by. Bangladesh have not yet played a series in England, whether it be a Test, ODI, or T20I.

The Telegraph reports that the ECB would like to encourage other countries to host Test matches in order to keep the format fresh, and they are currently looking into inviting Bangladesh. England will only host five Tests during their home summers of 2024 and 2025. Although the 2024 home summer coincides with the T20 World Cup being held in the West Indies and the United States, an opportunity may arise in these years to host a sixth Test match at home.

Every summer from the year 2000, with the exception of the year of the global pandemic in 2020, Lord's has hosted two Test matches as part of its staging arrangement. Strong ticket sales for the match against Ireland show that Test cricket at Lord's remains popular even when it does not include more well-known countries.

Marylebone Cricket Club chief executive Guy Lavender told Telegraph Sport that Lord's planned to keep hosting two annual Test matches. “We are very much looking forward to staging two Test matches at Lord’s in 2024. Moving forward, we think there is significant merit in staging two Test matches at Lord’s each summer, both in making best use of this incredible venue, as well as generating strong financial returns to support the growth of the game,” Lavender said.

Up until March of 2027, Bangladesh's upcoming tour itinerary doesn't include any matches in England. The popularity of Bangladeshi sports in England has been demonstrated by the high demand for tickets to their matches in the 2017 Champions Trophy and 2019 World Cup, as well as this year's one-day international series against Ireland in Chelmsford. Even if it's just for one Test, a trip from Bangladesh may aid the ECB in its efforts to reach out to the British Bangladeshi population.

The Telegraph cites ECB chief executive Richard Gold's comments on a recent podcast in this context, “encouraging people not just to play Test but make sure they can pay their players, and pay them well, so that they want to play Test cricket again.”
