Dundee, July 22, 2024 – Scotland fast-bowler Charlie Cassell delivered a historic performance by taking seven wickets for just 21 runs in 5.4 overs against Oman during the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 match in Dundee. This remarkable feat broke the all-time ODI record for the best figures on debut, previously held by South Africa's Kagiso Rabada.
Before Cassell's extraordinary spell, Rabada's record of 6/16 against Bangladesh in Mirpur in 2015 stood for nine years. Now, third on the list is the West Indies' Fidel Edwards, who took 6/22 against Zimbabwe in Harare in November 2003.
Cassell's inclusion in the Scotland squad came as he replaced Chris Sole, who was unavailable for personal reasons. Cassell wasted no time making an impact, picking up Zeeshan Maqsood and Ayaan Khan with his first two deliveries. Although the hat-trick ball did not yield a wicket, his fourth delivery saw Khalid Kail return to the pavilion. In the second over, Cassell dismissed Shoaib Khan, giving him four wickets in his first nine balls without conceding a run.
Scotland captain Richie Berrington praised Cassell's resilience and performance, stating, "You've come back from a huge setback, with that massive injury you had, put you out for a year and a bit. Just to see your resilience coming back, getting back on the park, and just love watching what you do at Forfs [Forfashire], and just the way how you hold yourself is incredible,” Berrington said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
