England skipper Jos Buttler and South Africa's star batsman Rassie van der Dussen engaged in a heated exchange of blows during the second ODI between England and South Africa in Bloemfontein on Sunday (29 January).
South African batter Rassie van der Dussen was seen engaged in a verbal altercation with England captain Jos Buttler during the second ODI on Sunday (29 January) in Bloemfontein. The couple appeared to be having a serious discussion, with Van der Dussen looking visibly unfazed.
The incident happened during the 19th over of the innings when South Africa were chasing a disheartening 343. Van der Dussen, who was making 22 deliveries from 14 at the time, reportedly attempted to prevent the keeper-batter from reaching the ball, leading to a heated exchange between the two. The umpires finally had order and broke the spat.
Their exchange of words was caught by the stump mics, and video of the incident went viral on social media. Normally the England skipper doesn't lose his mind and stays composed, but he was visibly frustrated after Rassie stopped him from making a catch.
The England captain had previously come under scrutiny during the 2019-20 South Africa tour when he was involved in a verbal altercation with Vernon Philander. Buttler had to pay 15 percent of his match fee for using obscene language towards the South African sailor when Philander held out while the Englishman was trying to collect a pitch. The Lancashire cricketer also took a minus point for the incident.
Jos Buttler-led England succumbed to their sixth straight ODI defeat as the Proteas recorded a win at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein, dropping 343 points with five wickets remaining to bag the series. England batted first, stacking up to 342-7 after half centuries from Harry Brook, Moeen Ali and the captain himself.
England have scored 181 goals in their last 20 overs despite starting poorly. In response, the home side started their chase strong, with Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma sewing a 77-run streak in 12 overs. Van der Dussen, who scored a century in the first ODI, made a run-a-ball 38 before Adil Rashid knocked him out.
Temba Bavuma fell just after his ton, but the likes of Heinrich Klassen, Aiden Markram and David Miller played responsibly to lead the Proteas to victory. The third and final ODI will be held in Kimberly on Wednesday February 1st.
