England’s white-ball captain, Jos Buttler, has expressed his excitement about working with Brendon McCullum, who was recently appointed head coach for all three formats of the game.

McCullum, who has been coaching England's Test team since May 2022, will take charge of the white-ball squads starting January 2025, following the conclusion of England's white-ball tour of India. His tenure will extend until the end of the ICC ODI World Cup in 2027.

Buttler, who missed the recent T20I series against Australia due to a calf injury, believes his approach to the game aligns closely with McCullum’s aggressive mentality. He is eager to tap into McCullum’s experience and gain valuable insights.

"I have a bit of a relationship with [Brendon McCullum] Baz but I'm looking forward to spending more time with him. I'm looking forward to digging into the cricket side of things. He will help me so much as a captain," Buttler said in an interview with Sky Sports during the third T20I against Australia.

The 33-year-old added that he wants to make this phase of his career the most enjoyable and focus on helping his teammates reach their full potential. “For me, I want this to be the most enjoyable part of my career. I've played for a decent amount of time now, so maybe a shift in the goalposts of what you really want to achieve and for me that's helping guys become what they can be and building towards two big events later on," Buttler further mentioned.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that McCullum’s new role will officially begin in January 2025, with Marcus Trescothick serving as interim head coach for the white-ball series against Australia and the upcoming tour of the Caribbean.

The T20I series between England and Australia ended 1-1 after the final match at Old Trafford was washed out due to rain. England and Australia will now prepare for the five-match ODI series, starting on September 19 at Trent Bridge, Nottingham.
