The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is set to undergo significant changes as part of an ambitious revamp led by Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president, Faruque Ahmed. With a commitment to eliminating past irregularities, the BCB is planning a refreshed approach to its premier franchise cricket league, the BPL, ahead of its 11th edition later this year.
The BCB President has taken personal initiative to communicate directly with the franchise owners, aiming for a smooth transition into the new season. Early discussions have revealed that four of the previous franchises are likely to return for the upcoming edition, ensuring continuity while bringing fresh perspectives to the league.
In the previous season, the BPL featured seven teams, including Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, Rangpur, Barishal, Cumilla, and Khulna. However, significant shifts are expected this time around. Dhaka’s former franchise has already opted out, with earlier participation by Beximco Group no longer on the table. Comilla Victorians are also stepping aside, leaving uncertainty about whether any team will represent Comilla this season. Khulna Tigers’ participation remains unclear as well.
Among the confirmed franchises, Chattogram Challengers are showing interest in assembling a squad once again. However, unresolved issues regarding player payments from last season have delayed the official go-ahead. There are talks that former Chittagong Kings owner, Samir Kader Chowdhury, may step in for team management, which would signify a return of a familiar franchise under new management. Fortune Barishal remains committed, having proposed a new revenue-sharing model to the BCB. Sylhet Strikers and Rangpur Riders are also set to return.
BCB president Faruque has personally reached out to potential franchise owners to ensure strong participation. One of the new contenders for Dhaka’s team is Remark-Herlan, a cosmetics company connected to several popular film stars, including Dhallywood superstar Shakib Khan. Meanwhile, Valentine Group has expressed interest in bringing back a team from Rajshahi, another former BPL franchise.
The BPL’s governing council has taken a backseat in this transitional phase, with Faruque handling most of the discussions himself. The final list of franchises is expected to be confirmed soon, as all interested parties must submit their franchise fees by the coming Tuesday.
