With the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) approaching, cricket fans eagerly anticipate an improved, high-scoring season. Historically, the BPL has faced criticism over pitch conditions, which have often led to slow, low-scoring games—contrary to the fast-paced, boundary-laden excitement expected in franchise T20 leagues. However, recent commitments from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) aim to address this, promising better quality pitches for the 11th edition of the league.
BCB president Faruque Ahmed had
earlier committed to upgrading the wickets for the upcoming BPL, and now BCB director
Nazmul Abedeen Fahim has also assured fans of strides toward this goal.
Speaking to the media, Fahim stated, “There will definitely be efforts to
ensure runs, bounce, and pace on the wickets. We’ve seen good pitches in Mirpur
occasionally in past BPLs, where sixes were hit even on tougher grounds. We
hope to replicate that standard this time. Guidelines have been set, and with
adequate rest for the pitches, we expect fans will get to see the boundaries
and sixes they desire.”
Fahim also highlighted the importance of improving pitches beyond the BPL. “It’s not just about the BPL—every cricketing pitch across the country needs this enhancement. Batters need a surface where they can play strokes and engage in positive cricket. The old days of scoring at 2.5-3 runs an over in Tests are gone; modern Test matches often see scoring rates of 4-4.5 runs an over. Pitches need to reflect this shift, and we are focusing on creating those conducive conditions," he added.
Scheduled to run from December 30, 2024, to February 7, 2025, the upcoming BPL season is set to offer a more balanced experience, aiming to deliver high scores and thrilling matches for fans.
