West Indies has unveiled the latest central contract list for the men's and women's teams for the upcoming 2023-24 season.
Jason Holder, Kyle Mayers and Nicholas Pooran have turned down Cricket West Indies Central contracts for the year 2023-2024. The governing body announced the men's and women's contracts for the coming season on Sunday (December 19), based on performances in the 2022-2023 season.
Despite turning down the contract, Jason Holder, Kyle Mayers and Nicholas Pooran assured CWI that they would be available for the T20Is later in the year. New contractual partners also took their place.
Left-handed spinner Gudakesh Motie, right-handed batsman Keacy Carty and left-handed batsmen Tagearine Chanderpaul and Alick Athanaze have been given the central assignments for the first time in the men's list, while all-rounders Zaida James and Sheneta Grimmond are two new names to appear in the women's list should.
Dr. West Indies Men's lead selector Desmond Haynes touched on the contracts and said they had offered contracts to those they expected to feature in the 2024 T20 World Cup. About this he said:
“Given a busy year of cricket, we have had several detailed discussions with the two head coaches across all three formats about which brand of cricket they would like to play. We are very clear about the direction we want to go. The players who have been offered contracts are among those we expect to field as we look to focus on fighting for the top spot when we host and take part in the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup on home soil.
We also have away Test series in Australia and England - these are two important tasks as we look to build a core of players in the 50-over format focused on the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027.”
Meanwhile, West Indies women's lead selector Ann Browne-John explored long-term options for players who will take West Indies cricket forward.
“The selectors have identified a squad of players who we believe can take West Indies cricket forward. We have placed emphasis on the development of the younger players, who we see as crucial to progressing to international level.
We have several high-profile bilateral series and major global events coming up and with that in mind, we want our players to be prepared and ready for any occasion.”
