Star all-rounder Ben Stokes makes his comeback in the ODI format as England name 15-member squad for New Zealand ODIs and T20Is at home in the next month.
Stokes reverses his decision and returns to the England Men's ODI squad, while uncapped Surrey fast bowler Gus Atkinson is included in the 15-man squad.
The 32-year-old Stokes announced retirement from ODI cricket 13 months ago. He decided to focus only on Tests and T20s. The all-rounder played a major role in England’s title win in the 2019 ODI World Cup and 2022 T20 World Cup.
A few days ago, England head coach Matthew Mott revealed that England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler would talk with England Test captain Ben Stokes to come out of retirement to participate in the ODI World Cup this year. And now it looks like Buttler has convinced Stokes very well.
“We have been able to name two extremely strong squads that underline the depth of talent we enjoy in white-ball cricket,” said Luke Wright, England men’s national team selector. “The return of Ben Stokes only adds to that quality with his match-winning ability and leadership. I am certain that every fan will enjoy seeing him back in an England ODI shirt again.
Gus Atkinson was rewarded with a debut call-up after emerging onto the scene this summer as a promising fast bowler. The 25-year-old has taken 20 wickets at an average of 20.20 in five County Championship games for Surrey. Perhaps more importantly, he is the second-leading wicket-taker in The Hundred, having taken nine wickets in four games at an average of 10.66 wickets per game.
Stokes has never stopped playing international Twenty20 cricket, but he is not on England's team for the four Twenty20 games against New Zealand. This squad includes 22-year-old right-armer John Turner, who was born in Johannesburg and did well for Hampshire in the Blast and qualified to play for England within weeks. Also in this squad are Atkinson and Josh Tongue, who is set to make his international white-ball debut after doing well in the Test team earlier this summer.
“We’re also excited to give first international call-ups to both Gus Atkinson and John Turner while Josh Tongue has deserved a place in the T20 squad after impressing during the Ashes. Any series against New Zealand is closely fought and will provide us with an ideal opportunity to test ourselves against one of the best teams in the world,” Luke Wright added.
