England’s National Cricket Test Team captain, Ben Stokes, is expected to skip the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) mega-auction, focusing on his Test cricket duties instead. Stokes, who missed the previous IPL mega-auction, last played in the tournament in 2023 with Chennai Super Kings (CSK). His decision is reportedly influenced by England's busy Test schedule, including crucial series against India and Australia in 2025 which is belong to the WTC 2025-27 circle.
Stokes previously skipped the 2024 IPL season to concentrate on England's home Ashes series, and his IPL appearances have been sporadic in recent years due to injury concerns and national commitments. In his brief stint with CSK in 2023, Stokes only featured in a few games before being sidelined by injuries.
The IPL governing body has introduced stricter rules for players who opt out of the tournament. Overseas players, especially those who withdraw at the last minute without a valid reason, could face a two-year ban from the league. These new regulations may further deter several England players from participating in the IPL.
With the last date to register for the IPL 2025 auction set for November 3, it remains unclear whether Stokes will enter his name. If he chooses not to participate, Stokes will miss the IPL until 2027, when he will be 36 years old, unless there are changes to the rules.
Stokes' decision underscores his commitment to Test cricket, as England aims to perform strongly in the World Test Championship (WTC) with key series on the horizon.
