Ben Stokes, captain of the England test team, set a peculiar milestone when he became the first captain in the game's 145-year Test history to claim victory without contributing with the bat, the ball, or the gloves.
Zak Crawley hit the first three balls of England's second innings to finish 12 runs and carry the game home, helping England to a ten-wicket victory against Ireland on day three of the sole Test between the two sides at Lord's.
Ireland were bowled out for 172 in the first innings. Stokes did not bowl in that innings. Then England collected 524 runs for 4 wickets. Stokes might have come to the crease with 1 more wicket down, but Ollie Pope, Ben Duckett didn't give that chance.
In the second innings, after a lot of hard effort, England dismissed Ireland for 362 for nine, with opener James McCollum out retiring hurt on 12. Debutant young seamer Josh Tongue took a five-wicket haul in the second innings. Stokes did not take the ball in the Irish's second innings either. Chasing the target of only 11 runs, England's opening pair ensured the team's victory.
The next assignment for England is the Ashes. The first two Tests of the home Ashes between England and Australia will begin on June 16 at Edgbaston.
