The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing to make a crucial decision regarding the leadership of the Indian women's cricket team following their disappointing early exit from the ongoing Women's T20 World Cup 2024 in the UAE. Under the captaincy of Harmanpreet Kaur, India failed to reach the knockout stages of the tournament, an unprecedented setback since her tenure as captain began in 2016.
India’s campaign in the T20 World Cup saw them bow out after losses to New Zealand in their opener and eventual elimination by Australia in their final group match. This defeat has reignited concerns over the team's stagnation under Harmanpreet’s leadership, despite the promising talent in the squad. The last few ICC tournaments saw India make significant progress, including a runner-up finish in 2020, making this year’s failure a harsh reality check.
According to a report on The Indian Express The BCCI is expected to meet with the selection committee and head coach Amol Muzumdar ahead of the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, scheduled to begin on October 24. The meeting will focus on Harmanpreet’s captaincy and assess if a change is necessary as the team prepares for the next 50-over World Cup, which India will host. While Harmanpreet’s place in the squad seems secure, her captaincy is now under scrutiny, and the BCCI may opt for a leadership transition as they look to the future.
Former captain Mithali Raj voiced her concerns in an interview with PTI, calling for a new approach in leadership. She suggested that the team’s repeated struggles in ICC events highlight the need for fresh ideas. “If the selectors decide to change, I would go for a young captain. This is the time,” Mithali said.
