Despite widespread media reports about BCB president Nazmul Hasan Papon’s resignation, Sports Advisor Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyanh as claimed that there is still no formal confirmation of his resignation. However, he assured that there would soon be positive news regarding changes in the leadership of sports organizations.
Previously, Papon was the head of the Ministry of Sports. After the government’s fall, Asif Mahmud took over as the interim government’s Sports Advisor. Since then, Papon has been inactive as the BCB president.
Currently, the position of BCB vice-president, which is supposed to be in the constitution, is vacant. This has led to a halt in the board’s activities.
In a media briefing on Sunday (August 18), Asif stated, "The constitution needs to be democratic and should not allow for autocratic practices. We have plans to reorganize accordingly. We aim to make sports free from political influence. We will form a search committee to review whether responsible individuals are in each federation, their backgrounds, and the basis for their positions. We will restructure the federations with those connected to sports and attempt to minimize political involvement."
Regarding Papon’s resignation, he said, "I have seen reports about the resignation of the BCB president and directors in the media. We have not yet received any formal confirmation or statement. We are discussing this with various stakeholders, cricket organizers, and former cricketers to find a good resolution."
Asif also addressed the possibility of hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup. He mentioned, "The matter of the Women’s World Cup is still in process. We will reach a decision through discussions with the ICC and other bodies and will inform you soon. Hosting the T20 World Cup would be a significant milestone for us, especially as Bangladesh is going through a challenging time. Ensuring the security of our guests is also our responsibility, which involves not just the Ministry of Sports but also the Ministry of Home Affairs. Dr. Muhammad Yunus is involved, and a new Home Affairs Advisor has been appointed. We will decide after discussions with everyone and ongoing talks with the ICC."
