The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is exploring the possibility of introducing a Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). However, the board plans to first evaluate its capacity to host such a tournament, with immediate focus placed on fortifying the foundation of the Men’s BPL.
At a grand event unveiling the BPL mascot, women cricketers from the Bangladesh national team were also present. During the ceremony, BCB President Faruque Ahmed addressed questions from the media regarding the prospect of a Women’s BPL.
Describing the idea of a Women’s BPL as “fantastic,” Faruque Ahmed remarked, “This board has always prioritized women’s cricket. We’ve already started initiatives like the U-19 women’s team. We’ll look into how we can provide even more opportunities and facilities for women cricketers.”
However, the BCB president acknowledged the current limitations in organizing such a league. “We need to ensure that we are capable of hosting a Women’s BPL first. We can try, and then we’ll see how it goes,” he added.
The BCB’s immediate focus is on revamping and strengthening the Men’s BPL. Faruque Ahmed emphasized the need for consistency and long-term partnerships to solidify the league’s foundation.
“We want to establish the Men’s BPL on a stronger footing. Although this is my first BPL as president and the last under this management board, I hope the next edition features bigger franchises and long-term commitments. It’s not ideal for a tournament to see 2-3 new teams every year,” he explained.
