Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed a new head coach for the women’s team after its failure in the Asia Cup at home. Former Sri Lankan cricketer Hashan Tillakaratne has been appointed and he’ll join the team at the beginning of November ahead of the New Zealand tour.
Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel, head of BCB's women's department, confirmed this news and said that the contract with Tillakaratne is for two years. Tillakaratne came as the head coach of Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup held in Sylhet a few days ago. It was then that BCB had initial talks with him. Nadel said that it is now final.
The 1996 World Cup winner Tillakaratne played 83 Tests for Sri Lanka. He scored 4545 runs with 11 centuries at an average of 42.87. He also played 200 ODIs for his country and scored 3789 runs at an average of 29.60 with 2 centuries and 13 fifties.
Bangladesh could not reach the semi-finals in the Asia Cup campaign to retain the title. They finished fifth in the seven-team tournament with just two wins in six matches.
Next December, Bangladesh will tour New Zealand to play a three-match ODI series. For this, the team have already started a preparation camp in Mirpur.
Incidentally, the 55-year-old former wicket-keeper and batter will be the third Sri Lankan for the coaching role with the Bangladesh team. Former off-spinner Rangana Herath is the spin bowling coach for the men's team and is with the men's team in Australia for the World Cup. Former fast bowler Champaka Ramanayake (now holidaying in Sri Lanka) is attached with the High performance Centre (HPC) in Bangladesh.
