Bangladesh Women’s cricket team wrapped up their West Indies tour on a disappointing note, suffering a five-wicket defeat in the final T20I. The Nigar Sultana-led side managed just one win in six matches across both ODI and T20I formats, marking a tough campaign for the team.
In the third and final T20I at Warner Park, Bangladesh posted a modest 104/8 in 20 overs after losing wickets at regular intervals. The hosts chased down the target with nine balls to spare, securing a 3-0 series sweep.
Despite defending a below-par total, Bangladesh’s bowlers showed great resilience. Off-spinner Sultana Khatun and leg-spinner Fahima Khatun removed both West Indies openers inside 26 runs. The key wicket of Deandra Dottin, who had scored 51 and 49 in the previous two matches, further boosted Bangladesh’s hopes. She fell for just 10 runs off 12 balls, caught by Fahima off Rabeya Khan.
At one stage, West Indies slumped to 61/5, but with the target being small, Shabika Gajnabi (27 off 25 balls) and Zaida James (14 off 22 balls) held their nerves to guide the team to victory.
Batting remained a major concern for Bangladesh throughout the series. Despite a steady 24-run opening stand in 3.3 overs, the team failed to capitalize. Regular wickets slowed down the scoring, leaving Bangladesh with a below-par total. Skipper Nigar Sultana top-scored with 33 off 43 balls, while Dilara Akter (21 off 16) and Murshida Khatun (13 off 12) were the only other batters to reach double figures.
This defeat marks Bangladesh’s ninth consecutive T20I loss. Before this 3-0 whitewash in the West Indies, they had suffered a similar 3-0 loss to Ireland Women at home in December. Prior to that, Bangladesh lost their final three matches in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in October.
Bangladesh had traveled to the West Indies aiming to secure a direct spot in the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup. A minimum of three points from the three-match ODI series would have guaranteed qualification, but with two defeats, they lost that opportunity. As a result, Bangladesh will now have to go through the qualifiers to earn their place in the global event.
