On a mission to seal their first-ever 50-over World Cup berth, Bangladesh have beaten Pakistan by three wickets to kick off Women's World Cup Qualifier at the Old Hararians, Harare.
Bangladesh skipper Nigar Sultana had asked the South Asian rivals to bat first at the toss. The bowlers made sure they have the best possible side against a strong side. Pakistan were five down for 49 runs in 17.5 overs.
Experienced Nida Dar set up a 137-run stand with Aliya Riaz for the sixth-wicket to shift the momentum and frustrate Bangladesh camp. Dar scored her best-ever 87 off 111 balls striking 8 fours and 2 sixes. Riaz played vital knock of 82-ball 61 not out, helping Pakistan post a fighting 201/7.
As for Bangladesh, Nahida Akter and Ritu Moni were pick of the bowlers.
The Tigresses took their time with the run chase after losing Murshida Khatun in the fifth over. Sharmin Akter (31 off 67) and Fargana Hoque (45 off 90) put on 70 together before a mini collapse saw the score down to 98/4.
With quick runs needed, Rumana Ahmed delivered with unbeaten 44-ball 50 runs hitting six boundaries to finish the game with two balls to spare. Ritu Moni contributed 37-ball 33 during a 61-run stand with her.
Salma Khatun saw through the game with Rumana as Bangladesh's asking rate crept up to 10-an-over with three wickets in hand.
Bangladesh's next Group B game is against the USA on November 23.
Meanwhile, the same Group B saw a shock Thailand win as hosts Zimbabwe fell eight short of Thailand's 247 at the Harare Sports Club.
Six teams from two groups of five will make it to the Super Sixes, from which only three will earn ticket to New Zealand 2022.
