A major development is that Babar Azam, captain of the Pakistan national cricket team, has resigned from his position following the World Cup debacle in all three formats of the game.
Babar Azam has resigned from captaincy in all formats after a meeting with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Management Committee Chairman Zaka Ashraf.
During the meeting, Babar was informed that the board intended to retain him as captain for red-ball cricket but would replace him for white-ball cricket.
In his statement, Babar said, “I vividly remember the moment when I received the call from PCB to lead Pakistan in 2019. In the last four years, I have experienced many ups and downs on and off the field, but I did it with all my heart and passion, aiming to maintain Pakistan's pride and respect in the cricket world."
He said that achieving the top spot in white-ball cricket was the result of "joint efforts of players, coaches and management" but I would like to express my gratitude to the passionate Pakistan cricket fans for their unwavering support throughout this journey . .
“Today I am stepping down as captain of Pakistan in all formats. It's a difficult decision, but I think it's the right time to make this call. I will continue to represent Pakistan as a player in all three formats. I am here to support the new captain and the team with my experience and commitment,” he said.
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Pakistan Cricket Board for entrusting me with this significant responsibility,” concluded Babar.
The former top-ranked ODI batter in the world, who averages 56.72 in the format and has 19 centuries to his name, says he will continue to be available for Pakistan in all formats and whoever takes the office takes over, will offer his support as captain.
Under the leadership of Babar Azam, Pakistan played 43 ODIs and won 26 while losing 15. In T20Is, Babar Azam led Pakistan to 42 wins from 71 matches, with the team suffering defeats in 23 matches. He also led Pakistan in 20 Tests, of which the team won 10 and lost 6.
