Asif Mahmud on Shakib Al Hasan’s return: 'Security is key, emotions must be respected'
Shakib, who was elected as a Member of Parliament for Magura-1 under the Awami League in January, has found himself entangled in legal challenges after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government in August. These issues, coupled with his involvement in a murder case, have made his return to Bangladesh more complex. As a result, Shakib is seeking security assurances to ensure a safe return home and a smooth exit after his farewell Test.

Bangladesh cricket star Shakib Al Hasan has announced his desire to retire from Test cricket after the home series against South Africa, but his plans remain uncertain due to security concerns following the political shift in the country.
In response to these concerns, Asif Mahmud, Youth and Sports Advisor of Bangladesh, addressed the situation, highlighting the emotional context surrounding Shakib's situation. He stated, “He is a cricketer, and as a citizen of Bangladesh, there should be no obstacles for him to return and play. However, what has been seen on social media or in the writings on the wall is purely emotional. They have the right to express those feelings. It is a democratic country, and journalists have the right to engage in any movement or activity. But in this case, my concern is that no one’s security should be compromised.”
Asif also emphasized the importance of security for both Shakib and the upcoming South Africa series, expressing concern over the image this situation might project internationally. He stated, “If there are any legal issues, the law will run its course. I cannot comment on that. However, we must ensure the highest level of security. South Africa will be coming, and we need to maintain a good environment. Otherwise, foreign countries might feel unsafe coming to Bangladesh for cricket.”
Regarding the selection of the national team and ensuring security, Asif assured that it is the state's responsibility to guarantee the safety of all citizens, including Shakib. “The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will handle team selection. It is the state's responsibility to ensure the safety of every citizen, and this includes the cricket team. We will ensure this, and I believe the emotional aspect must be considered, as a significant movement has occurred. Shakib was involved with the previous fascist government, which he has clarified in his post, yet some emotions remain. Whether those emotions are logical or illogical, I will not go into that debate. That is a different discussion.”
While there are no current legal barriers preventing Shakib’s return, Asif acknowledged that the legal process must take its own course. “There doesn’t seem to be any legal obstacles at present. The law will run its course. I cannot speak to that. Asif Sir [Asif Nazrul] from the Law Ministry has already said that if Shakib is not involved, his name will be removed from the murder case after the primary investigation.”
Asif also expressed confidence in the rule of law in Bangladesh, highlighting the country’s history of maintaining order even in times of political upheaval. “I believe that the people of Bangladesh have great respect for the law. This has been proven before. After such a significant upheaval in Bangladesh, it is common to see disorder in many countries, but people here have maintained a strong sense of respect for the law. We haven’t gone too far in that direction, and many expected a far worse situation.”
As Shakib awaits assurances about his security, his farewell Test remains uncertain. Although there are no immediate legal barriers, his request for security guarantees is crucial for his return. For Bangladesh's most celebrated cricketer, his desire to play his final Test match in front of home supporters depends on whether these guarantees can be provided.
Shakib’s situation has attracted both emotional and political reactions from fans and the public, and as Asif Mahmud pointed out, “There should be no obstacle for him to return and play.” However, the country's authorities must now navigate this delicate balance between ensuring security and respecting public sentiment. All eyes are now on whether Shakib Al Hasan can take the field for his final Test bow at Sher-e-Bangla Cricket Stadium.
