Bangladesh cricket legend Shakib Al Hasan has announced his retirement from Test and T20 cricket. While he played his last T20 match, Shakib expressed his desire to end his Test career on home soil. However, given the current political climate in Bangladesh, that seems like a tall order. In a recent statement, Interim Government’s Youth and Sports Advisor, Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, offered hope to Shakib and his fans.
Asif Mahmud, one of the key coordinators of the July Revolution, shared his willingness to ensure that Shakib is provided with maximum security to fulfill his wish of playing his farewell Test in Bangladesh. He reassured the cricket community that the government is committed to protecting its star player as he nears the twilight of his illustrious career.
He said, “We will certainly provide the highest security to one of our finest players. If there are no major objections, we will ensure his protection. The Ministry of Law has clarified its stance, and we are clear in ensuring Shakib’s security.”
Shakib is currently entangled in legal issues, including a murder case related to the killing of a garment worker named Rubel in Adabor Thana. Although the allegations remain unproven and are seen by many as politically motivated, Shakib faces a cloud of accusations. His involvement in the stock market controversy and his former position as an elected MP under the previous government have also raised questions.
Nevertheless, Asif Mahmud emphasized that Shakib deserves to bow out in front of his home fans, acknowledging his invaluable contributions to the sport.
“I hope for the same. Someone who has achieved so much for his country should get his farewell here in Bangladesh. That’s what I wish to see,” he added.
